Angola ranks 4th worldwide in 2008 landmine clearance

(The Portugal News on Line) Angola ranked fourth worldwide in 2008 regarding areas cleared of landmines, according to the latest study by the International Campaign to Eradicate Landmines released Thursday in Geneva.

“Landmine Monitor 2009” said Angola cleared eight square kilometres of mined areas last year out of a total suspect area of 1,239 sq kms. In all, 158 sq kms were cleared of landmines worldwide in 2008, allowing the destruction of more than 476,000 anti-personnel mines and nearly 100,000 anti-vehicle devices, the study said.
