Benguela – Angola’s success story

By Richard Fleming, BBC World Service Sport. Benguela is one of 18 provinces which make up Angola, and is situated on the west coast, midway down the country.

It’s a far cry from the capital city, Luanda, in which I spent my first five days on Angolan soil, and during which much time was wasted cooped-up in cars crawling along gridlocked roads, slowly cooking.

No, Benguela is much more to my liking. It’s quiet and relaxed, which is why those in Luanda with the means, rush to Benguela for a weekend getaway. The most popular of the many beaches is Praia Morena, which extends for 10km. Take my advice, though, and steer clear on Sundays – it’s heaving! Read on……………
