Behold Benguela! This beach city, a 45-minute flight south of Luanda, feels like paradise compared to the Angolan capital. Traffic is reasonable, many streets are paved and free of trash, and the downtown area is largely a mix of refurbished colonial buildings and new hotels and banks. Expats and locals mingle in pleasant cafes, bars, and restaurants; they play in the surf and stroll the beach and the tree-lined promenade day and night. There’s still a plague of poverty—you’re never far from slums of homes built from mud walls and flimsy metal rooftops—but there’s a sense here that things are improving. More………….
