Roque Santeiro Relocated

Louise Redvers uncovers the mixed blessings of relocating one of Africa’s largest markets.

Named after a Brazilian soap opera and spreading over 50 hectares with close to 6,000 vendors, Roque Santeiro was the heartbeat of the country’s informal economy where you could buy everything from food and household products to car parts, white goods and clothes.

Despite a huge community outcry, the market was closed down last September and its traders relocated to a new custom-built market 20 kilometres north at Panguila. More………
