Plans for a road bridge between mainland Angola and Cabinda

September 5, 2010

Luanda, Angola, 1 Sept – The Angolan government Monday in Luanda asked for financial and technological support from Japan for the construction of a bridge between the provinces of Zaire and Cabinda, the National Private Investment Agency (ANIP) said.

In a statement cited by Angolan news agency Angop, ANIP said that the request had been made during a meeting of Japanese and Angolan government officials, at the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

The bridge will be 20 kilometre long and is part of a project known as Cabinda Link, with an estimated cost of US$2.55 billion, which begins in Soyo and ends 150 kilometres later in Cabinda, passing through the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Angolan and Congolese authorities have regularly met to analyse the various phases of execution, such as choice of blueprint, financier and contractor, as well as visits along its entire length.

As part of the project, the China Road and Bridge Corporation drew up, at the request of the Angolan government, four projects with separate quotes, characteristics and deadlines for execution.

The statement published by ANI said that the Angolan government, represented by the secretary of State for Cooperation, Exalgina Gambôa, had also asked for Japan’s support for large-scale road and mini hydroelectric projects.

At the meeting with the Japanese delegation, headed by secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Osamu Fujimura, Angola also asked for help in creating and introducing a digital television system across the country. (macauhub)
