September 21, 2011A passenger and freight rail link has been re-established between Lobito and Benguela. The new 4 carriage long Chinese built trains carry 256 passengers. The cost of a ticket is 50 Kwanzas and there is a fine of 300 Kwanzas for those caught travelling without a ticket.
Initially there will be two trains daily, stopping at Catumbela, Negrão Damba-Maria and Universidade Jean Piaget stations.
The trains leave Benguela and Lobito stations at 0600 each day, arriving 65 minutes later. The return journey leaves each station at 1700.
Benguela railroad in Angola partially reopens after 27-year stoppage
September 4, 2011At the end of August, President dos Santos inaugurated the repaired train service linking Benguela, Lobito and Huambo. The rail service had been interrupted since 2002. Repairs began in 2006. In order to reach Luau in 2012 , a further 347kms of track will need to be repaired. Ticket and timetable details are not yet known but a ticket between Lobito and Benguela is understood to cost 30 Kwanzas compared to 150 Kwanzas travelling by taxi.
Comboio volta apitar no Huambo dentro de 60 dias
June 13, 2011Huambo – O comboio do caminho de Ferro de Benguela (CFB), volta a apitar definitivamente na província do Huambo dentro de 60 dias, depois de 27 anos de paralisação, anunciou hoje, nesta cidade, o ministro dos Transportes, Augusto da Silva Tomás.
Augusto Tomás anunciou o facto no final da sua viagem de comboio vindo da província de Benguela, onde foi fiscalizar o grau de execução das obras realizadas ao longo da linha-férrea.
“Vamos trabalhar para completar tudo o que é necessário, corrigir o que se pode e criar condições para que dentro de 60 dias o mais tardar, o comboio volte a apitar no Huambo de forma definitiva e em Setembro possa chegar a província do Bié para devolver a
alegria a população desta região”, destacou.
O governante referiu que o país vive um ciclo de reconstrução, reconciliação e de paz, pois tudo o que no passado era um sonho começa a ser transformado em realidade.
Afirmou que as obras foram acompanhadas pela fiscalização, seguiram as regras estabelecidas internacionalmente e os prazos foram na medida do possível respeitados.
“Chegou o momento do povo angolano em particular o das províncias do Huambo, Bié e Moxico voltarem a sorrir como no passado”.
Por seu turno, o governador da província do Huambo, Fernando Faustino Muteka, lançou um repto aos homens de negócios pois que, com o comboio a funcionar haverá maior facilidade de movimentação das mercadorias e a qualidade de vida da população vai melhorar.
Faustino Muteka destacou que, o reinício da circulação do comboio vai permitir a criação de novos postos de trabalho, a chegada da mercadoria de forma segura ao mesmo tempo que vai contribuir para o ressurgimento do sector industrial numa altura que está em fase de conclusão a barragem hidroeléctrica do Ngove.
A chegada do comboio experimental a estação da cidade do Huambo foi testemunhada por milhares de cidadãos, membros do executivo local, representantes de partidos políticos e entidades religiosas.

France opens an Honorary Consulate in Lobito
May 5, 2011Benguela – The city of Lobito, in the south-west province of Benguela has since Thursday a consular services of the French Embassy in Angola.
The services of the French diplomacy in Benguela will be directed according to the French ambassador in Angola, Phillipp Garnier by Robert Bremaud. The diplomat said that the opening of the services in Lobito aims to meet with the reality of the number of joint ventures that are represented in the country. The companies like Sonamet, Angoflex, Ponticelli, services Getma and others from France are, according to the source, the ones that deserve monitoring by the French diplomacy.
The municipal administrator of Lobito, representing the governor of Benguela, Armando da Cruz Neto in the ceremony congratulated French authorities saying that this represents the socio-political dimension and trust that authorities of other countries have toward the region.

A walk across Africa taking in Angola
April 25, 2011In the Spring of 2011, Julian Monroe Fisher, will set out upon his most ambitious expedition to date.
Entitled EQUATORIA – A WALK ACROSS AFRICA, the expedition will have Fisher walking west from the Indian Ocean coastal town of Pemba, Mozambique, towards the coastal town of Lobito, Angola, at the Atlantic Ocean. The more than 4,000 mile walk will take him across the landscape comprising parts of the territories of the African countries of Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola.
EQUATORIA – A WALK ACROSS AFRICA wants to bring global awareness to the efforts of the Mines Advisory Group – MAG International and their work in current and former conflict zones to reduce the threat of death and injury from remnants of conflict.

New hotel in Lobito – Hotel Belo Horizonte – updated with address

A classic example of Angolan journalism is the report in O Pais which extols the virtues of the new hotel Belo Horizonte. However it fails to say which town it is in and, as usual for Angolan press reports, it does not contain any contact details such as address, telephone, email or website etc. If anyone has these details, please let me know, thanks.
As far as I can establish, this new hotel is in Lobito and has the following: 64 rooms, restaurant, bar, pool, gym and parking. A fuller description in Portuguese is on the O Pais website.

April 3, 2010A new beach hotel in Lobito has opened. Full details (in Portuguese) are in this newspaper article. In summary, the hotel, when fully completed will have: beach chairs, large TV screen, 35 luxury bungalows – some with Jacuzi, bar, restaurant, fitness centre and meeting room.
